DOCUMENT SET-UP

FILE      NEW
Name the file or leave untitled

Choose image size – use inches

Resolution- refers to the number of dots per inch (dpi) if you are printing or pixels per inch (ppi) fi you are looking at the computer screen.  Important because the resolution determines te quality of the image.  Higher the resolution, better the quality. 
Low res, 72 dpi – Hi res, 300 dpi

Color or grayscale

Choose background color or transparency

CLICK OK - A WINDOW WILL OPEN

HOW TO OPEN AN EXISTING IMAGE INTO PHOTOSHOP

FILE      OPEN

Find image either on desktop, flash drive, etc.

MENU BAR

Edit, Image, Layer, Select, Filter, View, Window

Each tool has a variety of options. Click on a tool to view the options

EXERCISE
Open a new page and try some of the tools.  Click the paintbrush and draw some squiggles and lines.  Click an eraser and erase part of them.  Try dragging the smudge tool across one of the lines.  Select a piece of line with one of the selection tools and move it to another part of the page. Change the options for the tools. Explore.  Create.  Invent.

FILE FORMATS

FILE      SAVE AS – FORMAT
Format allows you to bring the image into other programs
PSD- photoshop format, can only be used in photoshop
TIFF, EPS, PICT- can open in InDesign and Quark
TIFF, EPS, JPEG (JPG) and PICT – can open in illustrator
GIF, JPEG and BMP- suitable for printer
All of the above can be opened in Photoshop

IMAGE

IMAGE MODES
Modes are methods of defining color
RGB- Red, Breen Blue- Monitors, digital cameras
CMYK- Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black – Printers
DUOTONE- printing method where two colors are used on a grayscale image
GRAYSCALE- 256 shades of gray
BITMAP- Black and white
INDEXED COLOR- web graphics
LAB COLOR-three channel mode for consistency between printers and monitors
MULTICHANNEL- multiple 256 grayscale channels

EXERCISE
Download images

Open in Photoshop.  Save it as a psd.  Change the color mode from color to grayscale, bitmap and back.  Play around with your image using some of the filters.  Save the image using save as.  Give it a name.
