Newsletter
With this project, you will show that you have a good understanding of how InDesign and Illustrator operates as well as showing your conceptual expertise. You are to design a newsletter using InDesign for the layout. I would like you to use Illustrator to design a logo for the title of the newsletter, PROPERLY CHILLED or POST PUNK KITCHEN. You will save the Illustrator file as an EPS to be placed into InDesign. i will provide the copy for the newsletter, which will be 4 pages. You can add images as you see fit. The newsletter is a Music theme or a Recipe - Health and Wellness theme. There is an actual website called www.properlychilled.com and postpunkkitchen.com if you want more inspiration.

Parameters
Programs to be used:
Illustrator CS2
InDesign CS2
All typography and layout must be designed in InDesign. The title must be a logo developed using Illustrator. You can only use 3 sizes of type throughout the entire layout.

There are several levels of hierarchy within this copy. Visual Heirarchy
Headings
Sub-heads
Body copy, etc.

Steps in the Graphic Design Process for your Sketchbook:

  • Analyze the audience
  • Consider the purpose of your message
  • Establish goals
  • Choose an appropriate format, grid and layout
  • Select appropriate typefaces, type sizes, type styles, and spacing
  • Add and manipulate graphics
  • Organize text and graphics
  • Proofread
  • Refine and fine-tune

Grading
Grading for this project will be based on the difficulty of the design. Simple design will be marked the lowest and more complex will be graded the highest. I am not expecting you to be an expert, however, I do expect you to challenge yourself.

Process
Begin with laying out your text in columns on each page, connecting the boxes. Separate any information that needs to be in its own box. ie. IN THIS UPDATE separate from body copy. Work on logo after copy is placed in the document. Go back to
styling after logo is complete.

Presentation Requirements
You will turn in a folded newsletter, printed front, back and inside. Final size will be printed on 11 X 17, folded. Final output should be a color print at 300 dpi. Be prepared to present your newsletter to the class. What were your influences, concept, and target audience?
